the anecdotal evidence
From the emails I've gotten from far-flung friends in Florida (who have voted already and are pounding the pavement) and Minnesota (on the GOTV trail and at the Kerry rallies), and from my obsessive prowling on the blogs, I'm getting the distinct feeling that s participatory democracy has taken on new life and that Americans are mobilized to vote in order to protest the present regime in numbers and intensity that will take everyone in the Mainstream Media by surprise.
I think the results on Tuesday will be shocking. The Mainstream Media is pretending to report right now on the campaigns, but I think that the result of the GOTV campaigns are revitalizing our investment in the democratic process.

this is just plain silly. "the mainstream media" are a whole lot of people working with even more people, not some deceitful wizard in disguise: blogs are mainstream by now, and there is no technocratic conspiracy to keep reality off the tv screen, nor is there an exclusive claim to veracity on behalf of blogging. it's just a more direct, unfiltered, personal channel since that's how people have been using it. yes, there are a lot of people who feel watching CNN for the news is like going to Disneyland to study mice: but as long as you keep your wits about you, you use every source of information judiciously instead of opposing broadcast brainwash to online manna.
Say what you will, they mainstream media is getting it wrong on these last days of this election...because of what I will call structural problems.
I don't mind being cast in the role of conspiracy theorist on this one.
