An uncanny Chinese copy of Orange County drew the ire of a NY Times architecture critic, who decried its rendition of a Southern California planned community, complete with manicured lawns and the option of French, Italian or Spanish styling...

edward said got it only half right when he decried orientalism. what we have among the Chinese is rampant occidentalism....taking its cue from the Pacific and pacified perspective on the Mediterranean that is SoCal -- spain, italy, california all mashed into one big ball of reified mediocrity, bringing within grasp of the newly rich a sense of immediate access: reification looks the same everywhere...
